Mushroom Identification Classes

Welcome to an exhilarating journey into the world of mushroom identification!
This visual classroom presentation kicks off by guiding you through the fascinating process of identifying mushrooms, setting the stage for an adventure into the wild.
We'll then dive into the specifics of identifying various species, starting with the Maritimes' most toxic mushrooms—because safety comes first! After that, you'll explore the rich diversity of edible and medicinal mushrooms that can be found in the region.
This workshop is perfect for those eager to start their foraging adventure. Remember, while you'll gain the skills to identify mushrooms, always verify your findings with reliable sources before consuming any mushrooms.

Mushroom Culinary Events

Join us for an unforgettable culinary adventure as I team up with local island chef and baker Bianca Ivankovic from Dae’s Fine Foods to bring you delectable dishes made with locally foraged mushrooms.
These events seamlessly blend mushroom identification with the joy of tasting skillfully crafted mushroom delicacies.
Depending on the mushroom varieties and recipes selected for each event, you might also enjoy a live demonstration on how to prepare some of these mouthwatering dishes.
Plus, every attendee will receive a copy of the recipes prepared and tasted at the event, so you can recreate these delicious flavors at home.

Mushroom Cultivation Classes

In this hands-on workshop, I will teach you how to grow King Stropharia mushrooms (also known as wine caps or garden giants) in your outdoor garden. These perennial mushrooms will produce for many years with minimal maintenance, making them perfect for gardeners of all experience levels, from novice to avid. The workshop combines explanation and demonstration, ensuring that you leave with all the knowledge needed to start your own mushroom garden. You'll also receive a step-by-step guide to take home and refer to as you begin your cultivation journey.

King Stropharia mushrooms are easily recognized by their vibrant, reddish-brown to purple-burgundy caps that lighten as they mature, and their thick, white stems, which often feature a ring near the top. The flavor and texture of wine cap mushrooms are often compared to portobellos—they have a mild, earthy taste with a meaty texture, but with a slightly sweeter and nuttier profile.

The cost of the workshop includes a wine cap starter spawn kit, sufficient to create a garden of 25 square feet (or 2.3 square meters). Join us to learn how to cultivate this delicious mushroom in your own garden!
